چکیده

A method is presented for the determination of cholesterol and phospholipid, which requires 5 I . of human serum or 1-2 ml. of cerebrospinal fluids. With this method 5-100 zg. of cholesterol and phospholipid can be separated by a modified silicic acid column after elution of the mixture with 1 ml. of chloroform and 3 ml. of methanol. Recovery for 24.6 sg. of cholesterol and 30.5 g. of phospholipid was 98.4 and 96.7%, respectively. Standard deviations of ±1.73 and ±1.24 have been obtained for the reproducibility of cholesterol and phospholipid determinations after chromatography. The method has been applied for the estimation of the cholesterol/ phospholipid ratio and of lipid phosphorus in total phosphorus of human cerebrospinal fluids.

The cholesterol and cholesterol ester content of cerebrospinal fluid in patients with multiple sclerosis and other neurological diseases.

Cumings (1953, 1955) showed that demyelination of the human brain caused by multiple sclerosis resulted in a loss of free cholesterol and the appearance of cholesterol esters in the involved areas. Cholesterol is a principal constituent of myelin and, according to Cumings, exists in the normal brain entirely as the free non-esterified sterol. It seemed of interest to determine the cholesterol c...

Direct determination of the linoleate/oleate ratio in serum cholesterol esters by liquid chromatography.

We describe a convenient method for the direct determination of the serum cholesterol linoleate/cholesterol oleate (L/O) ratio by reversed-phase "high-performance" liquid chromatography. After removal of phospholipids by silicic acid chromatography, a serum extract is analyzed on a 5-micrometers particle size Ultrasphere-ODS column, eluted isocratically with acetonitrile/isopropanol (30/70, by ...

Evaluation of the Relationship between Endometriosis and Omega-3 and Omega-6 Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids

Background: Endometriosis is a common chronic inflammation causing major problems including infertility. The role of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as their potential anti-inflammatory effects in endometriosis needs to be further explored. The objective of this study was to compare serum phospholipid fatty acid profile in endometriosis patients with controls, and to explore the correlation of ...

Fatty Acid Components of Rat-tissue Lipids.

1. The lipids of rat heart, kidney, skeletal muscle and liver were separated by chromatography on silicic acid into cholesterol ester, triglyceride, free-fatty acid and phospholipid fractions. 2. The fatty acid compositions of these fractions were determined by gas-liquid chromatography. 3. Palmitic acid was always present in highest concentration in the cholesterol ester fraction; oleic acid w...

Chromatographic behaviour of rat-liver monophosphoinositide.

1. Chromatography of rat-liver lipids on a column of silicic acid or a mixture of silicic acid and Hyflo Super-Cel, with chloroform-methanol mixtures, gave monophosphoinositide-containing fractions which were invariably contaminated by the presence of nitrogen-containing phospholipids. The behaviour of the inositide was extremely sensitive to column loading and the results with different batche...
